        Merseyside Archaeological Society Publications

        MAS Newsletter

        Merseyside Archaeological Society’s newsletter appears four times a year. It contains notices of forthcoming Society events and other events of interest and short articles. We invite members to contribute accounts of recent Society events, reviews of books and exhibitions and accounts of participation in archaeological activity. Contributions should be submitted to Jenny Woodcock.

        MAS Journal

        Merseyside Archaeological Society has published a journal since 1977. It contains reports on local excavations, conference proceedings and discussion papers. Paid-up members are entitled to a copy of the current journal free of charge.
        We welcome articles about the archaeology of Merseyside from professional and amateur archaeologists. If you are interested in contributing please contact the editor, Dave Roberts. The following notes on style and layout will help with your article.

        Latest Journal: Volume 12, Archaeology in Merseyside to AD 1750 (2008)

        Volume 13 contains papers on aspects of Merseyside's prehistory.
        It includes articles on:
        • Excavations at Southworth Hall Farm near Winwick, Cheshire. This includes a discussion on the Neolithic and Bronze background of the area
        • Recording images old and new on the Calderstones in Liverpool
        • An analysis of three 19th-century pictures of the Calderstones
        • A discussion regarding the prehistoric origins of Calderstones Park
        • The possible use of logboats in the Formby area during the Bronze age

        The Changing Face of Liverpool, 1207 - 1770

        Merseyside Archaeological Society published The Changing Face of Liverpool, 1207 - 1770 in 2007 to celebrate Liverpool’s 800th birthday. It is a lavishly-illustrated account of the development of the historic core of the city based on archaeological and documentary sources. It costs £5 and can be bought from the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Liverpool World Museum and the Walker Art Gallery. You can order it by post from the Publications Secretary (postage and packing extra).

        The Calderstones - a prehistoric tomb in Liverpool

        The Calderstones are the remains of a Neolithic tomb which are on display in Calderstones Park. In 2008 Merseyside Archaeological Society led a project to investigate the history of the stones and The Calderstones - a prehistoric tomb in Liverpool is one product of the project. It is a full-colour booklet on the Calderstones written by Dr Ron Cowell of National Museums Liverpool containing the results of the latest research and thinking about the stones. It is available for £2.50 at Liverpool World Museum and the café in Calderstones Park or you can order it by post from the Publications Secretary (postage and packing extra).

        Articles from out-of-print journals can be supplied as photocopies at the cost of photocopying plus postage and packing from the Publications Secretary.

        All books and journals can be bought from the Publications Secretary, Julia McLaughlin Cook at estcarp@hotmail.co.uk.
        Some publications are on sale at National Museum Liverpool venues, such as the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Liverpool World Museum and the Walker Art Gallery. Check individual venues to see what is available there.
        From time to time members of the Merseyside Archaeological Society run a bookstall at a local event such as the Liverpool Big History Fair and the Wirral History and Heritage Fair. We announce these at Society meetings and advertise these in the Society’s newsletter.
        Publications can be picked up at Merseyside Archaeological Society lectures and outings by prior arrangement with the Publications Secretary.
